Reading Time: 3 minutes

1) Keep moving…even if it is at a snail’s pace.

When you stop and stand still, you lose momentum. The momentum is what keeps us exploring and helps us to find that one thing. That one thing can help make a difference to

your situation. If you keep moving, the mud can’t settle, and it can’t trap you. Once you stop, the mud begins to dry around you, and you feel completely stuck. While you are moving, you keep the water flowing (even if it is just a little) and you keep the mud and progress churning. The little bit of flexibility is better than no flexibility at all.

2) Let go of the past.

When we stop and feel stuck in the mud, we begin to reflect on what could have been. In my experience, this is the door opening for depression. We look back into the past and think “I could have… I should have… I didn’t do this.” When we are depressed, we feel depleted and defeated and stuck in a stationary condition.  For some people, depression is standing still and looking back into the past and thinking, “If only I had not met him or if only I didn’t do that, or if that didn’t happen or she didn’t say this or I should have done that”. When we beginto peer into our rear vision mirror, we crash our momentum, and we stop moving forward. We start reversing back into the what if’s instead of driving forward into what we actually want.

3) Learn to improve your time management skills.

What are you doing that is taking up so much of your time? Is it really helping you to move forward? Do you lack organisational skills? By tweaking your time management skills, you can alleviate some stress. In fact, just learning to manage your time better can help remove the feelings of being stuck and instead allow you to create more time more space to do the things that you love. Also consider rating your tasks 1 to 5 (one being most urgent) and start there.

4) Understand your stress and what is the cause of it.

The stress may be there – it could even be warranted. You may have too much on your plate. With all of my life experiences, trials and tribulations, my understanding of stress comes down to this. When you are feeling stuck in one place, and instead, you want to be over there…but you aren’t sure how you can move. Things become frantic, I’ve got to do this, and I’ve got to do that, and I HAVE to get over there. Look what everyone else is doing, I should be over there. It’s wanting to be in a different place, without knowing how to get there. Learn to understand why you are stressed and if it can be helped with time management, improved organisational skills or delegation.

5) Be present in the now.

People need to be present in the now, which will help loosen the grip that depression and anxiety can have on you. For some people, anxiety is the fear of not achieving or not being good enough. It’s looking into the future and thinking – I can’t do that. Some people feel depressed because they spend a lot of time focusing in the past. So, being present in the now can help you to accept what has been and prepare for what is coming.
